HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS INFECTION – CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS (GROUP II)
Acute illness may be accompanied by neutropaenia, lymphopaenia, thrombocytopaenia, and mildly elevated ESR or serum transaminases. During recovery, a lymphocytosis may occur with appearance of atypical mononuclear cells and an inversion of the CD4+:CD8+ ratio due to elevation of CD8+ cells.
Group II — Asymptomatic infection
Whether or not there has been an acute illness, infection is usually followed by a latent period of months or years during which the patient is infectious but asymptomatic. Fifty per cent of patients with HIV infection will develop AIDS within 10 years. Seroconversion usually occurs within 3 months of infection but occasionally takes longer. Group II patients have a confirmed positive test for HIV antibody and may or may not be immunodeficient.
