HAYFEVER

March 24th 2009 -

When spring approaches many people suffer from a number of allergy symptoms. One of the most common is spring hay fever, or allergic rhinitis. This is quite a devastating problem because if it becomes chronic, it can sometimes weaken the body’s resistance and make it more susceptible to other diseases.

Airborne pollens including wheat and corn, fungi, spores and rusts can cause irritation of the mucous membranes in the nose and throat. This irritation can lead to a running nose and quite often sneezing attacks, along with a sore, itchy throat and itchy, swollen eyes. Spring hay fever differs from that of perennial allergic rhinitis which is not seasonal. It is brought by things like house dust, foods, feathers, industrial fumes, drugs and polluted air. Unfortunately most of us at one stage or another are subjected to these irritants and quite often experience the discomfort of sneezing attacks and congested and inflamed mucous membranes in the nose. What we have to do is find a way of preventing this annoying condition.

Remove things containing feathers such as eiderdowns from the house as these are known to cause problems. The house should be well ventilated and cleaned with a vacuum cleaner which has a micro-filter that prepares airborne particles of house dust returning to the air. Do not eat foods you may be allergic to. Dairy products can be a problem. Avoid growing plants that are proven allergens. Privet should not be grown and is restricted by law in certain states. If the problem still persists then look at what can be done to alleviate it.
