ALLERGY TO CLEANING PRODUCTS/CHEMICALS AT WORK OR SCHOOL: BLEACHES

March 30th 2009 -

Bleaches are of two basic types – chlorine bleaches and oxygen bleaches. Chlorine bleaches are often troublesome and should be avoided; oxygen bleaches are usually well tolerated.

Liquid bleaches and scouring powder bleaches (such as Vim or Ajax) are chlorine bleaches. Avoid using these if you can; they give off free chlorine. If you do ever use them, above all do not do so together with anything containing acid (such as toilet cleaner or de-scalers). Mixing chlorine bleach and acid can bring about a chemical reaction which releases large amounts of chlorine.

Use an oxygen bleach for preference. Oxygen bleaches can cause irritation even to a non-allergic person’s skin and airways if handled carelessly, but they should not cause sensitivity. Amway sell an oxygen bleach. They have a network of local agents; contact Amway at the address below to find your nearest agent. Ecover also make an oxygen bleach. This can be ordered via a health food shop or is available by post from The Green Catalogue.
